Shen’s Zlogar is acting on her dreams

CLIFTON PARK (Nov. 19) — Shenendehowa senior Kym Zlogar is so used to seeing “The Look” that she has made it a big part of her college admission essays.

It’s the look serious adults give her when she tells them plans to study acting in college and make a career of it.

“I chalk it up to people’s ignorance about acting,” Zlogar said. “I think that some people genuinely think it should be my hobby. But this is definitely the right path for me.”

It’s been her path since kindergarden, when she proclaimed to her mother that she was going to be an actress. In second grade, she started taking weekly children’s acting classes on Saturday mornings at the New York State Theatre Institute. That year she gained a part in “A Christmas Carol” at Russell Sage College, a role she held for three years.

This weekend Zlogar will star as Hester Prynne in the Shenendehowa High School Drama Club’s production of “The Scarlet Letter.” There will be shows at 7:30 p.m. Thursday-Saturday (Nov. 19, 20 and 21) in the High School West Auditorium. Tickets are $8. It will be the seventh play of Zlogar’s high school career with only the spring production of “Anything Goes” remaining before she heads to college.

Which college it will be she doesn’t know yet. When you’re hoping to earn an BFA in acting, the college admission process is a little different. In addition to the general admission application, Zlogar has to also supply a resume, a head shot and an essay about why acting is important to her. Then she hits the road.

“I have to go to each of the schools and do an acting audition for them,” she said of her upcoming visits to 10 colleges during January and February. “The pressure is intense, but for me I love it. It is definitely something I’m looking forward to.”

Luckily for her, her parents are looking forward to it, too. They have never given her “The Look” about her career choice.

“They just love what I do,” Zlogar said.

Zlogar will be sharing the stage with a familiar costar. She and Robbie Callen were also costars in last year’s production of “Pride and Prejudice.”

“We did plays in middle school together,” Zlogar said. “I’ve been working with Robbie for a really long time now.”

Like Zlogar, Callen has been acting for a long time.

“I started when I was 8 years old,” he said. “I was in ‘Sleeping Beauty’ when I was in third grade.”

Of all his role, Callen said his current one as Arthur Dimmesdale is the hardest.

“My character is so intense,” he said. “Throughout the entire show, I am clutching my chest. It’s heavy breathing. It’s very, very difficult but very rewarding.”

Unlike Zlogar, Callen doesn’t plan to make acting a career. He wants to study language and neuroscience as an undergraduate and then head to medical school. Next month he hopes to hear from Johns Hopkins about his early decision application.

“I want to be a neurologist,” he said.
