The Getaway offers family-friendly fare

CLIFTON PARK (Nov. 3) — You might think of The Getaway as a sports bar. Its walls are filled with jerseys and TVs tuned to ESPN or the night’s big game.

But there’s no bar. At least not one that serves alcohol. If someone wants to buy a friend a drink, a root-beer float is considered the hard stuff. There’s also over 25 flavors of smoothies, banana splits and hot-fudge sundaes along with burgers, sandwiches and finger foods.

Gail and Tom Alverson have opened The Getaway, a sports-themed, family-friendly, alcohol-free restaurant in Clifton Park Center.

Gail and Tom Alverson have opened The Getaway, a sports-themed, family-friendly, alcohol-free restaurant in Clifton Park Center.

“We have children. There really never was a place for them to go,” said Tom Alverson, who opened the restaurant with his wife, Gail. The couple also operates the concession stands at the Clifton Park baseball fields and the SportsPlex of Halfmoon. “They can come in here, get an ice cream and relax a little bit.”

To help them relax, The Getaway offers free WiFi and a selection of arcade games. Plus plenty of TVs for watching ESPN and the big games. (The Getaway will even be open on Thanksgiving night for the Giants game.)

Despite the major-league sports on television, the rest of the athletics theme has a hometown feel. The jerseys on the wall are from teams such as Miss Shen Softball and Junior Plainsmen Football. Kids who give the restaurant sports cards bearing their pictures — a common feature of team photos — receive a discount; Alverson plans to collect the cards and eventually use to decorate the tables.

“We an alternative to the chains,” said Alverson, who is a Shenendehowa graduate. “We’re from the area, so we know what it’s like.”

The eatery also aims for family-friendly prices to match its family-friendly atmosphere.

“For 10 bucks, you can get a hamburger, fries, a drink and play a few games,” Alverson said. “We had a family of 9 in here, and the bill was $88. I think our average check is $9.”

Starting Nov. 7, The Getaway will offer an all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet for $6.99 on weekend mornings. And there’s also a senior-citizen discount.

“We’re not just trying to go for the kids,” Alverson said. “It’s a friendly place for everyone.”
