Renzi nearing end of Shen diving career
CLIFTON PARK (Oct. 22) — Christine Renzi never intended to become a diver. She was a swimmer, but the Knolls swim team didn’t have room for another swimmer. But there was an opening for a diver.
With the fearlessness of a 9-year-old, she said she’d do it. Now — 8 years later — she’s the senior leader among the Shenendehowa girls divers.

Senior Christine Renzi started on the Shen girls diving team when she was in 8th grade.
Now her time with the team is winding down. There’s a diving meet Saturday at Mohonasen that Renzi will miss because she will be doing a college visit to Quinnipiac University. Then Monday will be senior night as the swim team is host to Queensbury.
Finally there is the sectionals on Nov. 7. That’s the big meet, the one that gives Renzi the chance to end her Shen career with her first trip to the state championships. It could be the final meet of Renzi’s diving career.
“I definitely want to dive in college, but I don’t know if I will,” she said. “Academics and the school come first.”
That means she could have just 6 dives remaining — unless she makes states.
“Everything is possible,” she said. “It’s a matter if I can stay mentally tough and dive the way I can.”
“She is a very strong diver, one of the most prepared,” Shen diving coach Laurel Pietrykowski said. “That’s important because sectionals is one of those things that become easier with experience.”
Regardless of what happens, Renzi will miss the team next year.
“I’m going to be sad,” she said.
