Noonan, Clattenburg top Mohawk duathlon
HALFMOON (Oct. 18) — Ballston Spa’s John Noonan was the top finisher Sunday in the 7th annual Mohawk Towpath Byway Duathlon.
Noonan finished the duathlon — a 2.2-mile run, a 16-mile bicycle race and then another 2.2-mile run — in 1 hour, 10 minutes and 32 seconds. Schenectady’s Steve Becker was second, 40 seconds back.
Albany’s Rachel Clattenburg was the top female finisher, coming in 7th overall in 1:22:20. Albany’s Peter Schmitz-Morfe and Richard Shade were the top men’s team, and Albany’s Jess Dever and Worcester’s Mark Spaulding combined for the top mixed team.
Despite the frigid morning temperatures, 85 people participated in the duathlon, which started and ended at Krause’s Grove; 5 others took part in a youth fun event.
“This is just preparation for skiing,” said Buskirk’s Jill Koziol, who finished third in the women’s 31-39 age group. “And if I’m going to be cold when I’m skiing, I might as well bring it on in October.”
The events benefit the Mohawk Towpath Scenic Byway Coalition, a nonprofit that oversees Byway implementation.
